In the build-up to England‘s 2022 World Cup opener versus Iran, captain Harry Kane was determined to wear a One Love armband.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker wanted to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, however, he was prevented from doing so by the English FA.

Under the threat of sanctions from FIFA, those in power were forced to do a U-turn on the day of the match, which England went on to win 6-2.

The FA’s statement on OneLove armband

A statement on the issue from English football’s governing body read: “FIFA has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play.

“As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in FIFA World Cup games.

“We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.

“We are very frustrated by the FIFA decision which we believe is unprecedented — we wrote to FIFA in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response.

“Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways.”

But despite the heavily criticised U-turn, Kane appeared to make a symbolic gesture of his own ahead of England’s opener against Iran.

Per the Daily Mail, the England captain was seen wearing a rare Rainbow Rolex watch as he arrived at the stadium on Monday, a watch which is worth around £520,000.

The Insane Luxury Life Instagram page posted a picture of Kane sporting the fancy wristwear, with an accompanying caption that read: “The captain of England @harrykane wears a rare @rolex Daytona ‘Rainbow’ 116595RBOW in 18k rose gold, one of the most sought after pieces on market.

“This masterpiece is set with 36 baguette-cut rainbow sapphires on bezel, 56 brilliant-cut diamonds on the case and 11 baguette-cut rainbow colored sapphires as hour markers.

“The Daytona Rainbow was first released in 2012 in 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold, at the time they weren’t much appreciated by the market.”

Fair play, Harry.

Kane is expected to start England’s second World Cup group stage match against USA on Friday evening, despite having to go for a scan on his ankle in the week after picking up a knock in the Iran game.
