World Cup: Commentator announcing South Korea’s lineup vs Uruguay goes viral

GiveMeSport Football

South Korea got their World Cup campaign underway on Thursday afternoon at the Education City Stadium in Ar Rayyan.

Korea’s star player, Son Heung-min, had been a doubt in the lead up to their opening match against Uruguay after suffering a fracture around his left eye.

But, fortunately for the Asian country, Son was able to start the match while wearing an orbital mask.

Son could not inspire his country to victory, though.

There was just one shot on target in the whole match as the two sides played out a bore 0-0 draw.

Federico Valverde came ever so close to winning it for the South American side late on but his long-range effort crashed off the post.

Italian comically reads out South Korea’s lineup

Commentators around the world may not have been looking forward to Korea’s match.

That’s because many of Taegeuk Warriors’ players share the same name.

In the starting lineup, South Korea fielded five players called Kim: their goalkeeper and each of their four defenders.

They also fielded two players named Hwang, while Son, Na, Jung and Lee completed the XI.

It would have been tough for commentators with so many players sharing the same name.

But an Italian commentator has gone viral after expertly announcing their lineup.

Instead of reading out their full names, it took the commentator a few seconds to go through the lineup as he rattled off their surnames as quickly as he could. Watch the moment below…

The video has gone viral, attracting over retweets and rising at the time of writing. View some reaction below…

Son Heung-min: Build-up to the World Cup was a nightmare

Son Heung-min spoke to BeIN Sports after the match and, despite the lack of goalmouth action, he branded the match ‘entertaining’.

“It was a great match. It was 0-0 and people who could say ‘it was a boring game.’ But I don’t think it was. We fought amazingly and put in an unbelievable performance. We aren’t amazingly happy with a point but it’s better than nothing.”

On his build-up to the tournament, Son said: “It was a nightmare. I was doing everything to be here and play for this amazing country.

“After I got injured I called the physio and said ‘look, I don’t care the option. I need to play the World Cup.’

“The surgery went really went and I’m grateful for Spurs for doing everything to make sure I am here. It was a great feeling to be here and playing in the greatest tournament in the world.”
