Over the years, the FIFA World Cup has produced some of the greatest moments and goals in footballing history.

One such strike came in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show in a game between Spain and Portugal.

Portugal’s 2018 World Cup campaign saw them play against Spain, Morocco and Iran. Fernando Santos’ side advanced to the knockout stages after finishing second in the group, tied on points with Spain, who topped it.

However, matchday one between the two European powerhouses was easily one of the greatest games of the 2018 tournament.

The encounter kicked off emphatically after a lovely piece of skill by Ronaldo saw him fouled in the penalty area, giving the referee no choice but to award the spot kick to Portugal.

Ronaldo took responsibility and fired the ball into the right side of the goal, sending David De Gea the wrong way.

However, just before the halftime whistle, Ronaldo had his second goal of the game and restored Portugal’s lead after firing a strike through De Gea, who fumbled it into the goal.

In the second half, Portugal’s momentum slipped. In the 55th minute a well-worked set piece saw Sergio Busquets square the ball into the path of Costa, who found his second goal and leveled the game once more for Spain.

Costa’s goal rattled Portugal. Spain capitalised and took the lead for the first time in the game after Nacho Fernandez arrowed in a long-range effort.

Ronaldo stood over the ball from just over 20 yards, curled it over the wall and nestled it into the top right corner, leaving De Gea stranded in the Spain goal.
