West Ham: 130k-a-week star ‘joker in the pack’ at World Cup

GiveMeSport Football

West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paquetá could be “the joker in the pack” for Brazil at the World Cup this year, as Tite’s side look ahead to their opening game with Serbia this evening, according to journalist Tim Vickery.

The five-time World Cup winners are among the favourites for this year’s Qatar edition of the tournament.

What’s the latest on Paquetá?

Having been selected in Tite’s 26-man Brazil squad for the tournament, it is widely expected that Paquetá will be selected for the Seleção’s starting line-up against Serbia this evening.

The former Lyon man signed for West Ham for a club-record fee worth around £51m in the summer transfer window and will be hoping that he can help fire the South American giants to a sixth World Cup title, which would put them two ahead four-time winners Italy and Germany.

The 35-time international was part of the Brazil sides that won the 2019 Copa America and came runners-up in 2021 but will be hoping to add football’s most coveted prize to his collection of titles.

And Vickery believes that Paquetá could play in three, or even four different positions for Tite, with the midfielder providing plenty of versatility for the current leaders of the FIFA World Rankings.

What has Vickery said about Paquetá?

Vickery told GIVEMESPORT: “They do have a dilemma. And I know there are big debates about this in the coaching staff.

“He’s in the starting lineup. There is a more attacking way to line up the team where you can keep both wingers plus Richarlison at centre-forward and have Lucas Paquetá, and that is if Lucas Paquetá takes the place of Fred.

“Lucas Paquetá is like the joker in their pack, they’ve got three different formations, and it all hangs on his versatility.

“In those three formations, he plays three different roles, and he can play a fourth if he wants him to.

“But that’s one way he plays as the second man in midfield, alongside Casemiro.

“That would be a risk because there’s always the possibility of him losing the ball close to the goal.

“But that’s a decision that the Brazil coaching staff will have to take.”

What say will Paquetá have in Brazil’s success?

Being such an important player to the Brazil national team is not something to be sniffed at, and this shows the quality of player that West Ham currently have on their hands, and it seems as though Paquetá’s versatility will have a huge say in the Seleção’s success at this tournament.

Having played in mainly an attacking midfield role at the London Stadium, it could be that Tite decides to gamble in the side&#…
