As the cameras zoomed in on the No.7, he was seen loudly singing the words of ‘A Portuguesa’ and looking increasingly emotional as the song reached a crescendo.

He then smiled as the national anthem finished and set off to lead Portugal into battle, with the forward scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot in the 3-2 win.

By converting the spot kick that he himself had won, in the 65th minute, Ronaldo became the first ever player to score at five separate World Cups.
He scored one in 2006 against Iran, one in 2010 against North Korea, one in 2014 against Ghana, then four in 2018 with a hat-trick vs Spain and another vs Morocco.
Then, he added his eighth total World Cup goal here in Qatar.
Although he was unable to add to his tally in the final stages of the match, before his substitution in the 87th minute, goals from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao meant that the Portuguese took all three points in this Group H fixture.
