Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has taken aim at Edinson Cavani, as the departing striker was a “disgrace” during the 2021/22 season.
Cavani signed for Man Utd on a free transfer ahead of the 2020/21 campaign. He joined them following fruitful spells at Napoli and PSG.
The 35-year-old performed well for the Red Devils last term, scoring 17 goals in 39 games across all competitions.
The forward barely featured for United in his second season though. He has been hampered by injuries as he has only started seven times in the Premier League. Cavani is out of contract this summer.
He recently admitted that the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo made him wish he left last year. Scholes has criticised Cavani for his attitude this term:
“Cavani I think was a disgrace this year, he hardly ever played,” Scholes claimed (quotes via Mirror).
“He pulled out of the Middlesbrough game because he had to travel back from wherever he was. Funnily enough, since that Middlesbrough game I think I heard last night United have won only five out of 18 games or something since then.
“It’s been embarrassing, this manager [Erik ten Hag] now needs backing. Who’s going to help him do that? The club upstairs is still a bit of a mess, we don’t really know.
“Do you know what, we go back to last year as well we thought Ronaldo’s coming in, Varane is coming in. You are thinking, ‘yeah, here we go. Varane’s been disappointing. I think he’s got away with it a little bit. A lot of injuries, hardly played a game.”
