Jurgen Klopp could get a closer inspection at Brighton star Moises Caicedo when he takes his Liverpool side to the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Caicedo is one of a number of players to have been linked with the Reds during the January transfer window as Klopp faces external pressure to ease his midfield problems.

The Liverpool boss seemed to suggest that there will be no further arrivals at Anfield this month – following the signing of attacker Cody Gakpo – when he responded spikily to a question at his press conference to preview the clash with fellow top-four chasers Brighton.

But with the Reds’ midfield department failing to match the heights it has previously managed under Klopp, many fans would like the club’s owners FSG to splash the cash on a new addition in the centre of the park before the window closes.

Caicedo could fit the bill. The 21-year-old has only made 24 Premier League appearances after a dysfunctional start to his Seagulls career. However, he has now firmly made himself one of the key members of Roberto De Zerbi’s team.

After arriving from Independiente del Valle in February 2021, the Ecuadorian was forced to wait until August later that year for his debut. But within days he was being sent on loan to Belgian side Beerschot, where he remained until January 2022.

On his return to England, Caicedo began to establish himself in the Brighton starting line-up, firstly under Graham Potter and now under the new Chelsea manager’s successor, De Zerbi.

Manchester United were interested in signing the youngster before he made the move to the Seagulls and they are said to have continued to maintain an interest. But as the examples of Luis Diaz and Gakpo prove, Liverpool have history when it comes to swooping in to snatch transfer targets off their rivals. For now, however, the links with Caicedo are very much speculation.

But should they be? As, in the eyes of many, he ticks all the boxes for what the Reds need.

Where Liverpool have lacked in pressing this season, Caicedo has excelled. He currently ranks in the top five in the Premier League for tackles and joint 18th for interceptions. For reference, no Reds players feature in either of those top-20 lists.

Caicedo has made 47 tackles. The closest Liverpool players to him are Fabinho (with 32) and Thiago Alcantara (with 31). While his 23 interceptions is three better than the highest Reds player, Trent Alexander-Arnold (with 20). Of Klopp’s current midfielders, Fabinho leads the way (with 16).

And Caicedo’s defensive attributes accompany his attacking and passing qualities. He currently boasts an 87 per cent pass success rate and more than 3,000 yards in progressive passing compared to Fabinho’s 2,900 and 2,600 from Jordan Henderson. By comparison, Thiago, has more than 3,600 yards.

Impressive statistics for someone so young but his boss at Brighton has no doubt there is a lot more to come. “Caicedo is improving so much the quality of his play,” De Zerbi said via Read more – Liverpool FC
