Rio Ferdinand has been impressed with the attitude of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and still believes he is the best one v one defender around as the right-back prepares to start in the Manchester derby on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with Diogo Dalot the first choice at right-back under Erik ten Hag, with concerns over Wan-Bissaka’s game arising.

The former Crystal Palace man was never rated particularly highly going forward and when cracks appeared in his defending it appeared his career with United may be at an end.

However, with injury to Dalot he has returned to the Red Devils team and looked good in recent weeks, with Ferdinand liking what he has seen.

The United hero still thinks Wan-Bissaka excels in one aspect of defending and reckons he is showing the attitude to be an ideal squad player for Ten Hag.

‘There is something there,’ Ferdinand said for BT Sport. ‘The manager has obviously put his trust in Dalot on what he has seen on the training ground.

‘I still stand by that (Wan-Bissaka as the best one v one defender in world football). I said the same thing he is not the best defender but he is the best one v one defender. If you had a job to do on a wide man one v one, I would pick him over every single right back around.

‘But obviously here are other elements of his game that aren’t as good as other players. You have to give him credit because his nose has been put out of joint, he was the one with the shirt and the manager has come in and said “you are not the guy any more”, but when he has come in he has looked solid enough and that’s the attitude you want.’

He added: ‘When I played there were players who didn’t play every week. John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans etc – but when called upon they came in and gave top performances and that is down to professionalism and the culture at the club.’
