Real Madrid were dealt a huge blow in the transfer market this past weekend as their primary target, Kylian Mbappe, decided to snub them and extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
The 23-year-old was in the final couple of months of his contract with Les Parisiens and looked set for a move to the Spanish capital. However, a mega-money deal from the Ligue 1 champions convinced him to stay put at Parc des Princes for three more years.
With Real Madrid suffering a damning blow to their transfer aspirations, reports indicated that the La Liga champions had set their sights on a move for Bayern Munich superstar and Barcelona target Robert Lewandowski as an alternative.
The 33-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with the Bavarian giants and has decided to move on in the summer. Barça have been hot on his trail for a while now, with his agent Pini Zahavi, holding multiple meetings with the club officials already.
But, Real Madrid’s potential entry into the picture seemed to have raised some alarm among the fans. Given that Lewandowski has previously worked with Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern Munich, it could have also played a factor in his decision.
However, as reported by journalist Jorge Calabres, Real Madrid will not be making a move for Lewandowski in the summer transfer window despite missing out on the signing of Mbappe.
If true, this development should come as music to the ears of Barcelona supporters. The Catalans need a prolific goalscorer up top to lead the team and there are few better than Lewandowski at what he does.
