Icelandic footballer Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir has revealed that her former club, Olympique Lyonnais, did not pay her full salary during her pregnancy in 2021.
Megan Rapinoe, one of the international stars of women’s soccer reacted to these accusations, claiming to feel “ashamed” by this action from what is also her former team.
Rapinoe has always been fast to speak up in defence of women’s footballers and the injustices that they often faced, meaning she was always expected to speak up when Gunnarsdottir revealed that Lyon attempted not to pay her fully during her pregnancy.
“I know this story might upset some powerful people in the football world. You’re not supposed to talk about this side of the game. But I have to tell the truth,” Gunnarsdottir wrote in her Players’ Tribune piece.
The FIFA tribunal ruled on the case in May 2022, ruling that Olympique Lyon should pay around 82,000 euros plus interest to the midfielder.
