Pogba, Antony, Sancho: Man Utd’s most expensive transfer signings of all time

GiveMeSport Football

Manchester United are one of the biggest teams in English and world football and often have the transfer budget to show for it.

Last summer, Erik ten Hag spent £214m on new signings, bringing the likes of Casemiro, Leandro Martinez and Antony to Old Trafford.

Following the costliest summer in the Red Devils’ transfer history, here are the top five most expensive Manchester United signings of all time.

Who are Manchester United’s most expensive signings of all time?

5 – Romelu Lukaku – £76.2m from Everton (2017)

After a prolific stint for Everton in the Premier League, Romelu Lukaku became one of the most wanted strikers in the world.

Lukaku would hit 87 goals in 166 games for Everton, but his journey at Manchester United would be more divisive.

During his two years in Manchester, Lukaku scored 42 goals in 96 games, helping United finish second in the 17/18 season and reaching an FA Cup final under the management of Jose Mourinho.

However, starts and goals became less frequent in his second campaign and the Belgium international was sold to Inter Milan.

4 – Jadon Sancho – £76.5m from Borussia Dortmund (2021)

Jadon Sancho set the Bundesliga alight in his three seasons there, scoring 50 goals and assisting 64 in 136 games for Dortmund.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought the former City youngster back to Manchester in the 2021 transfer window, alongside the likes of Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The expectations of Sancho were for him to bring a new flair to the United ranks, but he struggled in his first season, getting 3 goals and 3 assists in 29 Premier League games

We’re still waiting for Sancho’s United career to truly take off.

3 – Harry Maguire – £78.3m from Leicester City (2019)

The 2019/20 season saw Manchester United break the transfer record for defenders as Harry Maguire joined United from Leicester City.

Solskjaer would make Maguire one of the first names in his teamsheet, and he was even named captain in less than a season.

Since then, it has been a rollercoaster for the United centre-back, who has often been a primary source of frustration for supporters.

Only time will tell when Maguire’s form will match the price tag, but it has seemingly weighed heavy throughout his time at Old Trafford.

2 – Antony – £85.5m from Ajax (2022)

Manchester United’s latest big-money addition was a signal of their faith in Ten Hag.

It’s not every day a major club pays £85.5m for a 22-year-old untested outside of the Eredivisie but the early signs are certainly encouraging.

The Brazilian winger scored three times in his first six Premier League games and United will be hoping he can maintain that strike-rate considering the money they’ve spent.

1) Paul Pogba – £94.5m from Juventus (2016)
