Owen Hargreaves admits Wout Weghorst is ‘not the sexiest signing’ in Manchester United’s history but is confident the on-loan striker can make a telling impact between now and the end of the season.

Weghorst had spent the last six months on loan at Turkish club Besiktas from Burnley, where he scored nine goals in 18 appearances across all competitions.
Weghorst joined Burnley in January 2022 for £12m but could not prevent the team from being relegated from the top flight in May.
Despite their impressive form in recent weeks, United have been largely reliant on the in-form Marcus Rashford for goals and Hargreaves believes the 6ft 6in striker can help Erik ten Hag address one of the biggest issues in his squad and compared Weghorst to former Arsenal and Chelsea striker to Olivier Giroud.
He told talkSPORT: ‘I know it’s probably not the sexiest signing in history but the money is not there for Manchester United and they needed a body through the door.
‘Goalscoring has been one of the biggest issues, they’re one of the lowest scoring teams in the top 10 so hopefully he can address that.
‘Look at the impact Olivier Giroud has for France that’s not the most explosive guy in the world. He’s not Thierry Henry but he’s there when they need him.
‘They’ve got enough creators when you think about Casemiro, Bruno, Eriksen and Marcus as well as Antony and Martial. They don’t need him to do anything but stand in the box and put the ball in the back of the net.’
Unfortunately for United, Weghorst did not sign in time to feature in Saturday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford, but he has vowed to make the most of his temporary spell back in the Premier League.
‘I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United. I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt,’ he said.
‘I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims. Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.
‘I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away.’
