Newcastle: Howe now facing ‘problem’ over 49m duo at St James’ Park

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe faces a huge problem having two players in the same position in Sven Botman and Dan Burn, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

The Magpies have signed the left-sided defensive pair for £49m in the last two windows, leaving Howe with a selection headache in the weeks ahead.

What’s the latest news involving Botman and Burn?

Having been in desperate need of defensive reinforcements when they were fighting relegation back in January, Newcastle signed Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion late on in the window.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “When they went for Botman back in January, they obviously didn’t have Dan Burn, it was Botman who they wanted, and they only turned their attention to Burn once they were unable to land Botman, because they knew they needed a left-sided defender for the second half of last season.

“And then suddenly Botman became available again in the summer for slightly less money than what they were talking about in January, and they thought, hang on, he’s a top talent, we think we can do a lot with him.

“So, they thought they could look a gift horse in the mouth and felt they had to take him, but what that has done leaves you with a problem because they’re two very similar players.”

Who is Howe’s first choice at left centre-back?

Despite Botman costing almost three times what Burn did, the latter is in Newcastle’s XI at present.
