Luis Suarez has opened up on his emotional exit from Atletico Madrid, insisting he was not informed about his departure until the day before his final game.

The Uruguayan striker was left sobbing on the bench after being substituted off in his final home match as an Atleti player and will now leave the club as a free agent this summer.

And in an interview with El Larguero, Suarez admitted he would have liked to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano but was shown the exit door.

‘Rafa Alique (Atletico director of communications) told me the day before my farewell, that they were going to give me a farewell,’ he said. ‘I did not know anything. I am 35 years old and I was also thinking about my future.

‘We had a meeting with the club in December, we agreed to talk in February, and Alique told me that they were going to give me a farewell and I said, “well, at least someone from the club tells me something”. He too was supposedly surprised.’

When asked if he had a conversation with ‘Cholo’ (boss Simeone), Suarez simply added: ‘No’. And when the 35-year-old, 132-cap international was asked what his next club would be, he insisted his future is uncertain.
