‘Lot to learn’ – Ashley Williams and Sol Campbell disagree over Darwin Nunez Uruguay performance

Two former Premier League and international stars have taken opposing views of Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez’s performance in Uruguay’s World Cup opener.

Nunez played out on the left of a three-man attack as Uruguay kicked-off their campaign in Qatar with a 0-0 draw with South Korea on Thursday.

One man watching closely for the BBC was ex-Everton defender Ashley Williams, who captained Wales during his playing days.

Liverpool signed Nunez in the summer from Benfica for a fee that could reach a club-record £85million and, after a shaky start, he is beginning to find his feet on Merseyside, scoring seven goals in his past 10 games for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Nunez started on the left of a front three for Uruguay in their goalless draw with South Korea, as former Reds striker Luis Suarez occupied the middle of the trio, and was unable to maintain his fine goalscoring form.

But Williams was impressed said during the coverage of the game: “Really good signing. I think at the start of the season people were questioning him a little.

“But now you’re starting to see him, he’s settled in, powerful, his confidence is very high, he can shoot on right and left, runs in behind. I think he’s got a little bit of work to do but starting next to Suarez should do him the world of good.”
