First Michael Edwards, now Julian Ward? The Mailbox reckons there’s trouble afoot at Liverpool. Also: Wales are a bit sh*t; and early shouts for a post-World Cup move.

Scared for Liverpool
So Julian Ward has now quit Liverpool?
This is a bigger loss than people seem to realize. Like it or not, the modern game runs on data science. It guides on-field tactics, team selections, transfer decisions – everything. And Liverpool was widely regarded as having the best data science team in world football. Michael Edwards was the architect of their current set-up and his leaving in the summer was a killer blow. Now his replacement quits just months later? Something is not right at Anfield.
If you’re looking for reasons why Liverpool is not replicating last season’s form, start here…
I’m English, so perhaps I don’t get the romanticism, but Wales are a bit sh*t aren’t they?
I’m glad they’re likely to be knocked out. They’re just wasting a spot at the World Cup. Just because they are there, it does not make them one of the best 32 in the world. Italy? Norway?
They don’t have a single decent player and don’t say Gareth Bale as he does bugger all except score a penalty. He’s no longer a superstar, he’s like Ronaldo, way past his best. With the likes of Moore up front, they have almost no chance of scoring a goal.
They are a poor side who were lucky to be at the World Cup and from a footballing perspective, won’t be missed. Iran fully deserved to beat them and bear in mind that England beat Iran 6-2!
Don’t know why I’m so annoyed, I’m not Welsh. But I see all this ‘love’ for Wales as the plucky underdogs, but they are in that position because they’re generally rubbish. Today, they got exactly what they deserved.
Stu, English Gooner in France (now expecting karma to dish up a Gareth Bale hat-trick against England to dump us out after we lose to the USA – it’s a funny old game).
…Sneakily watching the end of Wales v Iran at work and seeing a 98th minute thunderbolt to seal victory for a nation I have an enormous amount of love for (as covered in a previous mailbox). Good lord I love the World Cup. (Sorry Wales).

Playing for a move
So we have completed the first wave of Group Stage games at the 2022 World Cup, and by the time you are reading this mail we will be into the second wave, so which players have stood out so far that could be primed for a big post World Cup transfer in January?
The next Aleksandr Golovin or Gilberto Silva are waiting to be signed, my early shout would be Saudi Arabia’s goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais or Tunisia’s tough tackling midfielder Aissa Laidouni.

No flag on the play
Ok, so / every 2 years (much to my wifes chagrin.. possibly hatred) My house is decorated with Flags from every window, wall, fence and drive way tree! (that makes it sound way fancier than the 3 bed semi it is)
My car has more flags on it than an American football pitch during a foul play! (19 on the car – theres badges on all doors and bonnet too, pic is attached, not sure if you are allowed to show it)
The village sports club goes into overdrive with its marquee outside and extra tv’s to make sure everyone can watch the football, the Pizza and burger vans arrive and the place it buzzin! People all over the place, spilling onto the cricket / football field at half time to re enact goals or just make elbow room to have a beer and a ciggy..
Whether it be World Cup or Euros its always mobbed every England game (at the very least)
HOWEVER……. this world cup hasn’t seen 1 single car flag, not only in my house, or the village but anywhere.. I haven’t seen ANYONE get involved like they normally do.
The pub is dead. The Sports club hasnt even bothered with an outside flag this year.. and the marquee hasn’t been bothered with.. and I don’t think its all to do with peoples morals, or virtue signaling, or the entire village being from the ‘Alphabet Mafia’ (I have checked with all my sons LGBTQ+ friends and this is what they call themselves and I am allowed..)
For me, Clive, Its all to do with it being in Winter!
The weather is shit..! Its Winter… (in Europe)
People are not going out to sit in beer gardens and marquees and meet other people who they dont know and have a bloody brilliant time
Its cold, its wet, its dark and its just a bit sh*t really
So I blame FIFA (obviously) for agreeing to change it to a European winter event.. because its just really crap compared to a ‘normal’ year
No one seems to have gotten half as bothered or excited about this year and thats the real shame in my opinion
Maybe the Southern Hemisphere are over the moon about it being in the summer for a change?
Comon Wales today – If we beat the USA tomorrow (and Wales dont mess it up v Iran) then we can have an uncontested 1 nil Wales win on Tuesday and we can both go through..
Al – LFC and England always
Alisson Becker was completely clean shaven 12 days before Brazil’s match last night. 12 days to grow a full old timey prospector moustache is truly impressive.
Can any mailboxers beat that feat?
SC, Belfast (Don’t get me started on how fast Roy Keane can grow a beard)
Just like watching Brazil
Ok, ok, so it was “only Iran” that England beat in the opening game. And, I know it’s normally only the tabloids that go in for 1966 parallels. But, think about it… A spurs man up top (ok, Greaves didn’t play in the final), West Ham and Man Utd, etc, represented throughout the starting lineup… Holy cow, Brazil look good, huh?

Boycott or not
People sure do get salty about other people boycotting something they like dont they?
Personally, I’m not boycotting the world cup but I appreciate the mails from people who are as it’s interesting to me to hear other people’s differing opinions on the topic and how they’ve arrived at their decision. It’s not a personal attack.
Amro, Irish Gooner (just wait until a boycotting vegan writes in and then people will really lose their heads)
Sorry I disagree with this morning’s mail on Super Ally.
I’d happily have him on co comms for every match alongside John Champion. The best commentary double act at the world Cup!

Playing a fluid 5 – 3 -2 when defending to 3-5-2 when attacking with Gary Kelly and Terry Cooper flying up the wings
Bit light in midfield but with Billy playing like two players he’d snuff out most attacks and am still not convinced …
