Jose Mourinho won his first trophy in five years with UEFA Europa Conference League glory on Wednesday night.

The legendary Portuguese coach drew the curtains on his first season at AS Roma by guiding them to victory in the inaugural running of UEFA’s third-string men’s club competition.

With Nicolò Zaniolo scoring the only goal at the Arena Kombëtare in a 1-0 win over Feyenoord, Roma won their first ever major European trophy in a manner typical of Mourinho-led sides.

Glory for Mourinho

The Romans weren’t afraid to squeeze the life out of the game with canny and restrictive football, holding onto their narrow advantage despite their Dutch opponents piling on the pressure with crucial chances.

However, as Mourinho will be the first to say, a win is a win and the Roma coach’s record speaks for itself: a perfect run of five victories from five European finals across his illustrious career.

And having not gotten his hands on silverware since leading Manchester United to Europa League glory in 2017, it was very apparent that Roma’s Conference League triumph meant a lot to Mourinho.

An emotional win for Mourinho

You only have to look at his reaction to the semi-final victory over Leicester City to get that impression with the ‘Special One’ breaking down in tears on an emotional night at the Stadio Olimpico.

As such, if anything, it was actually surprising to see that Mourinho wasn’t crying, but rather holding five fingers aloft, when the final whistle confirmed Roma’s feat in Tirana, Albania.

However, you could still tell that emotions were running high and the waterworks eventually started when Mourinho soaked up the magnitude of the achievement in his post-match interviews.

Mourinho holds back the tears

The 59-year-old was clearly feeling incredibly proud and moved by his team’s European glory, holding back the tears as he reflected on a season that Roma fans will remember forever.

According to Football Italia, Mourinho said through tears to Sky Sport Italia: “There are so many things going through my head. So many things at the same time.

“I’ve been at Roma for 11 months, I realised the moment I arrived what it meant, they were waiting for this. As I told the lads in the locker room in Turin, we did what we needed to do, qualify for the Europa League. We had great work all season.

“This was not work tonight, this was history. We had to write history. We wrote it.”

Mourinho then ended any doubt about his future by confirming: “Now I am staying, there are no doubts. Even if some rumours emerge, I only want to remain at Roma.

“We must understand what our owners, who are fantastic people, want to do next season, because this is history, but we can build a really strong project with honest professionals. We need to sit down and understand what the plan is for next season.”
