Graeme Souness and Roy Keane clash over Lionel Messi’s penalty award for Argentina

GiveMeSport Football

Graeme Souness and Roy Keane clashed at half time of Argentina vs Saudi Arabia over a penalty awarded.

Argentina led 1-0 at the break thanks to Lionel Messi’s penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after Leandro Paredes was pulled down in the penalty area.

After a VAR check, Argentina were awarded the penalty.

Having seen the replays, there couldn’t be too many arguments.

Or so we thought.

That’s because, at half time, Keane and Souness completely disagreed on whether it was a penalty or not.

Keane didn’t think it was a penalty, while Souness did.

It led to an incredible clash between the two tough-tackling midfielders live on ITV.

“I’ve heard you say it 10 times,” Souness told Keane when the Irishman reiterated that it wasn’t a penalty. “Let someone else speak. You’ll learn a lot more if you listen rather than talk all the time.”

“Thank you for your time, no problem,” Keane replied.

The other pundit for ITV, Joe Cole, admitted he also thought it was a penalty which left Keane even more exacerbated.

Messi rolled in the penalty to give Argentina an early lead. And it looked as though Argentina would go on to beat their opponents comfortably in the first half.

It was an opening 45 minutes in which the Argentines had THREE goals disallowed for offside with Messi and Lautatro Martinez twice getting caught by the offside trap.

And then the unthinkable happened after half time.

Saleh Alshehri equalised just minutes into the second half for Saudi before Salem Aldawsari made it 2-1 just five minutes later.

Suddenly, Argentina’s penalty award was no longer a huge talking point.
