The last few months have been incredibly kind to Gavi. The Barcelona star was awarded the Kope Trophy by France Football for the Best U-21 player, and then followed it up with the prestigious Golden Boy award.
Following an impressive season with Barcelona, Gavi has been called up to the Spanish national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Not only that, but he is the first-choice central midfielder for Luis Enrique alongside Pedri.
His first game ended with a goal and assist, after which he was deemed the official Man of the Match. Speaking to following Spain’s incredible 7-0 win over Costa Rica, Gavi talked about his partnership with Pedri, among other things.
“Pedri is a great friend and we spend a lot of time together off the pitch and that is reflected on the pitch. He is an amazing player and makes everything easier for you,” he said, as quoted by SPORT.
The youngster also added, “It is a pleasure to be able to play with Pedri.”
Pedri and Gavi are the two youngest players in the national team set up, but they also have some of the most decorated players in European football, including captain and World Cup winning midfielder Sergio Busquets.
Gavi talked about their importance in the dressing room, saying, “The atmosphere within the dressing room is good. Busquets, Alba and Koke always give us some advice.”
Luis Enrique was criticised for calling up Gavi over the likes of Fabian Ruiz and Thiago Alcantara. The teenager has since repaid his faith, though, and was also verbally grateful to the former Barcelona manager.
“I’m very grateful to Luis Enrique for believing in me, he gave me confidence and helped me to grow. But I still have room to improve and I have to work hard on that.”
