Ferdinand tells Man Utd to sign relegated defender; plays down fears over another possible deal

Rio Ferdinand thinks Man Utd should sign Norwich City right-back Max Aarons this summer, while he has dismissed talk that Ajax centre-back Jurrien Timber is too small.

Aarons played 34 times as the Canaries were relegated from the Premier League this season, picking up just 22 points in the process.

There have been rumours that Aarons could leave Carrow Road for a few years now with Roma, Tottenham and Arsenal among the teams linked over the past year.

And with Aaron Wan-Bissaka reportedly told they can leave Man Utd in the summer, Ferdinand reckons Aarons would be a good “Chris Smalling-type signing”.

Ferdinand said on his Vibe with Five YouTube channel: “Someone like Max Aarons you could put him like a Chris Smalling-type signing where they come in and they have an impact.

“They may not be straight starters immediately but they go and they stay there for 10 years and have a really good career and they impact the club at different levels.”

With Erik ten Hag now the new permanent manager at Man Utd there has been speculation that he will raid his former club Ajax for new signings.

Timber is one player who has been mooted but there have been doubts raised over whether he has the physicality and height to compete in the Premier League.

But Ferdinand has dismissed that, he added: “I think the way Ten Hag’s playing, looking at it, it’s like, ‘We’re going to be the team that’s the aggressor, we’re going to be the team that dictates and dominates the games’. So he’s looking to play on the half-way line.
