Fans joke Saudi-funded Newcastle beat Argentina after the underdogs stunning 2-1 comeback

Daily Mail Online

Fans poured to social media on Tuesday after Saudi Arabia’s second-half comeback against Argentina, ironically praising Newcastle for continuing their form into the World Cup.

The Saudi-funded Magpies, who were bought by the Gulf State’s Public Investment Fund in 2021, enjoyed a scintillating start to the season before the World Cup, climbing to third in the Premier League.

And the luck of the Saudis seemed to continue on Tuesday as the underdog nation came from behind to shock Argentina and record a historic 2-1 win.

Led by Lionel Messi in what is likely his final opportunity to win the World Cup, Argentina were the favourites to advance from Group C before the tournament.

Fans quickly took to Twitter midway through the second half to praise Newcastle and Eddie Howe, as a result of their affiliation with Saudi Arabia.

One person posted ironically: ‘Newcastle are really sticking it to Argentina here!’

Another wrote: ‘Newcastle 2-1 Argentina, can’t believe it.’

A third chimed in and said: ‘Newcastle currently 2-1 up against Argentina. You love to see it.’

Messi’s 10th minute penalty put Saudi Arabia 1-0 behind early, before Argentina had three disallowed goals in the first half.

Fans joked that Howe was brought in by manager Herve Renard to deliver the half-time team talk, as Saudi Arabia came out an entirely different team in the second half and launched a comeback through Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari.

One user posted: ‘Saudis drafting Eddie Howe for the half time team talk.’

A second tweeted: ‘Eddie Howe’s secret Saudi army!’
