Arsenal, like the rest of world football – not least England fans right now – will have been salivating at Jude Bellingham’s dominating performance against Iran.

The 19-year-old midfield starlet controlled Gareth Southgate’s side throughout their 6-2 victory in the World Cup and scored the opening goal as well with a brilliant looping header. Although Bellingham has shown the world what he can do already, impressing for Borussia Dortmund in Germany and Europe as well as standout performances for his country earlier this year, his take to the highest stage was remarkable.

There is perhaps no wonder that so many clubs want to sign him in 2023, and Arsenal’s position at the top of the Premier League has strengthened their own desires to make a move.

As well as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United, the Gunners now hold a genuine attraction and the prospect of bringing him to north London is one that fans will be dreaming of. Their former scout Francis Cagagio has revealed that things could have been so different, however. He told La Voz de Galicia: “Jude is a player I have known since he was 15 years old when he was at Birmingham.”

As a 17-year-old he moved from the West Midlands to Germany for £22million, but the Gunners saw the potential even before that, and Cagagio added, “At Arsenal, we even made an offer for him – on two occasions. His football growth has been as expected.”

With a new midfielder being one of the requirements for Arteta in the upcoming windows, Bellingham may well become one of the go-to targets, but securing a deal won’t be easy. His performances, even before the World Cup, had already seen the price tag on his head move beyond £100million, which would be a major outlay for Edu to sanction at Arsenal.

It also doesn’t help that, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, former teammate Erling Haaland is playing his own role in getting the midfielder to Manchester City instead. He tweeted: “A standout performance from Jude Bellingham. Dortmund planning for a summer 2023 departure. Liverpool and Real Madrid are the frontrunners but it’s an open race. Erling Haaland has already told him to join Manchester City.

“Bellingham, a bit like Haaland, is also expected to ‘score’ his next move to help add a more dispassionate metric alongside his gut feeling. This may make it tough for teams without #UCL football next season.”

Although it currently looks like Arteta’s side will have European football, overcoming the lure of Pep Guardiola and Haaland will be tough, although it won’t be for the want of trying.
