The versatile defender will sign an extension at Camp Nou soon
Marcos Alonso will remain at Barcelona as planned. The defender has played well as a centre-back and as a left-back and both Xavi Hernández and the sporting committee have given the OK to renew his deal.
As SPORT has learned, the agreement between the two parties is practically complete and the announcement of his continuity could be imminent. Alonso will sign a contract for one season with the option of another one.
Alonso arrived from Chelsea last summer as a free agent. He lowered his salary to come to Camp Nou because of the salary limit problems at the Catalan club in a gesture of his total predisposition to be part of Xavi’s project.
During the campaign, and despite arriving without doing preseason, Marcos Alonso has been one of the most used summer signings.
Xavi has been using him both as a left-footed center-back and as a full-back. Barça are very satisfied with his professionalism and believe that he can be an important player for the next two years.
With the renewal of Alonso and the emergence of Alejandro Balde, the Blaugrana have the position of left-back well covered, so we will have to see what happens with Jordi Alba at the end of the season.
