Chelsea have been told to prioritise the arrival of Tottenham captain Harry Kane over former Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo. The 37-year-old striker recently became a free agent after the Red Devils announced on Tuesday that he would leave the club immediately.
Naturally, Ronaldo has been heavily linked with several of the world’s richest clubs as he looks to find a new home. One of which has been Chelsea after Todd Boehly tried to lure the Portugal international to Stamford Bridge in the summer before former boss Thomas Tuchel stood in his way.
According to CBS journalist Ben Jacobs, Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes will offer his client to the Blues, but a move ‘remains complicated’. The report confirms that Tuchel was a primary’ roadblock’ in negotiations last summer, with the German refusing to hold serious discussions over signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
While the American billionaire was evidently keen to sign Ronaldo, he’s been told to focus his efforts on welcoming Kane to west London by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Speaking to Grosvenor Casinos, the former Chelsea striker said that the Blues have missed the boat with the Portuguese star.
“I would have done Ronaldo for Chelsea in the summer, for one year, but obviously now I think the priorities are bigger in the summer,” Hasselbaink said. “I would try to persuade Kane to come.
“That would be a very controversial move, but surely he’s going to want to win things. Surely he knows he’s not going to win with Spurs.
“Surely, he’s not enjoying the way he is playing at the moment and where he’s playing. I know they’re all doing the shift for the team, but the majority of the time, when they don’t have the ball, he’s 10 meters away from his own box.
“You know, so surely he’s not going to want to be playing like that for the next 3-4 years. You know, surely he would want to be with the club that is going to go for it and is going to try to win trophies or are going to be closer to winning the trophies, so for me, they should go for him.”
According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato Web in September, Graham Potter is a big fan of the £68.7million-rated England captain and will attempt to lure him away from Spurs at the end of the season. Chelsea could look to offer Antonio Conte an opportunity to reunite with Romelu Lukaku, with the inclusion of a huge cash bid in the deal.
Food for thought…
