Chelsea and Arsenal given Cristiano Ronaldo transfer warning as Man Utd exit sparks ‘ego’ worry

Football.London

Chelsea and Arsenal have been warned against the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo amid risk of falling ‘victim’ to the former Manchester United star’s antics. The 37-year-old striker is now a free agent after the Red Devils confirmed on Tuesday evening that he would leave the club with immediate effect.

He had already been heavily linked with an exit from Old Trafford on a number of occasions this season but after an explosive TV interview with Piers Morgan his relationship with head coach Erik ten Hag – and the club’s fanbase – appeared beyond repair. United were said to be ‘furious’ after being caught by surprise by Ronaldo’s attack of the club, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner claiming that he felt betrayed.

United sought legal advice and the Portugal international was subsequently allowed to leave the club. With Ronaldo on the market and readily available to sign, a handful of the world’s richest clubs have been encouraged to make an approach – two of which being Chelsea and Arsenal.

However, Emmanuel Petit has urged his former sides to look elsewhere when delving into the January transfer market for a striker. Speaking to Compare.Bet, the former Blues and Gunners star insisted that Ronaldo’s next club could fall ‘victim’ to his antics.

“For me, can Ronaldo fix Chelsea’s problems? I would say no,” Petit said. “I think they have enough problems on the pitch and in the dressing room for Graham Potter to add more.

“I think this is new for Potter, big players, big egos. If you add one of the biggest egos in football history in Cristiano Ronaldo… Well, you’re going to have to say something to [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang as well, to other players.

“For me, there is no chance Cristiano Ronaldo will join Chelsea. Do you think Arsenal, Chelsea, big clubs like this, could be interested in taking Cristiano? They will think twice when realising what’s happened in the last couple of months between Manchester United and Ronaldo.

“Do you think a club will take the risk of becoming the next victim? No, I don’t think so. With all the good work [Mikel] Arteta and Edu have done over the last two or three years in the transfer market, with their transfer policy… Do you think he would take the risk, for one second, to put Cristiano Ronaldo into this dressing room, where the relationship with the players is beautiful? No, there’s no chance of it.”
