Celtic will ‘try to reward’ manager Ange Postecoglou with a new contract following a successful first season at the helm, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Greek-Australian tactician arrived to much controversy last June, but guided the Hoops to a Scottish Premiership and League Cup double, silencing his doubters in the process.

What is the latest news involving Celtic?

Postecoglou signed a 12-month rolling contract when he joined Celtic from Japanese outfit Yokohama F. Marinos, who he led to the J League title in 2019.

And despite initial reservations and a slow start to the campaign, the former Socceroos boss soon became a favourite amongst the Parkhead faithful as Celtic went unbeaten in their final 32 league games of 2021/22.

Postecoglou has moved to reassure the Glasgow giants’ fanbase that his future remains at the club despite not putting pen to paper on fresh terms just yet, revealing he ‘couldn’t be happier’.

“People shouldn’t fret about that stuff,” the 56-year-old insisted. “That’s not what drives me. It’s not what I am kind of seeking.

“I am at a big football club, with 60,000 people here each week. It’s one of the most famous clubs in the world, we will be playing in the Champions League next year and I can win trophies. I couldn’t be happier.”

What has Jones said about Postecoglou?

Jones believes the Celtic hierarchy will look to offer Postecoglou favourable new terms and may offer a long-term deal in order to prevent other clubs from prising him away cheaply.

He told GiveMeSport: “I imagine they’ll try to reward him in some term. I mean, whether he wants a long-term commitment, who knows, I don’t think he’ll be pushing necessarily for raises or anything like that at this point.

“But from a Celtic point of view, you’ve got this identity now; they’d hate to get into a situation at the start of next season where they’re doing really well, and suddenly another job comes up elsewhere, and he’s pretty available because there’s not going to be much of a fee to get him out of there.”

Does Postecoglou deserve a new deal?

Celtic appeared to be in a desperate state at the end of last term after fierce rivals Rangers finished 25 points clear of them at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
