Premier League club Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Rangers defender Calvin Bassey this summer.

The 22-year-old has been superb for the Gers this campaign as he helped them reach the Europa League final and win the Scottish Cup.

The Kylian Mbappe saga will be back again in three years; Real and PSG will demand it

He made 50 appearances across all competitions, providing six assists as he has played in the centre of defence as well as left-back under both Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Bassey played every minute of Rangers’ Europa League knockout stage campaign as they overcame the likes of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig to face Frankfurt in the final in Seville.

The Light Blues lost on penalties against the Bundesliga outfit, with Bassey putting in a monstrous performance alongside Connor Goldson in centre-half.

His showing brought praise from numerous pundits. Rangers’ all-time leading goalscorer Ally McCoist called the Nigeria international “phenomenal”.

After the Europa League final, Owen Hargreaves said (quotes via TEAMtalk): “Calvin Bassey, my word, what a performance. That was astonishing, the energy and effort. Everything about his game was fantastic.

“Anyone watching that will be thinking: ‘That’s the kind of player I want in my team’.”

He is unsurprisingly attracting interest from elsewhere, with Gerrard looking to reunite with the young defender at Aston Villa, according to The Times.

Villa’s scouts have been ‘impressed’ by Bassey as Gerrard has been given ‘financial backing’ by the club’s owners.
