Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is reportedly a doubt for Japan’s World Cup clash against Costa Rica on Sunday morning. The 24-year-old returned from injury on Wednesday to help his nation defeat 2014 World champions Germany 2-1 in their opening group game.

Tomiyasu had missed Arsenal’s final two Premier League games of the season after being forced off due to injury in the Europa League win over FC Zurich. However, he returned to action in Doha on Wednesday afternoon to help provide one of the tournament’s biggest upsets as they defeated Germany.

The 24-year-old replaced Real Sociedad forward Takefusa Kubo at half-time with Japan 1-0 down at the Khalifa International Stadium and played a starring role as Hajime Moriyasu’s side netted twice to defeat one of the tournament favourites.

Japan face Costa Rica and Spain in their two remaining games and victory on Sunday would bolster their chances of reaching the round of 16. However, according to Yomiuri Online, Tomiyasu and fellow right-back Hiroki Sakai are doubts for their clash at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium.

There were concerns of the pairs fitness after the victory over Germany when Kyodo News revealed that Japan’s media officer had confirmed Sakai had suffered a left hamstring injury the night before the game while Tomiyasu was carrying a similar one to his right.

Should both players be out of Sunday’s game, Kawasaki Frontale defender Miki Yamane would be next in line to start at right-back. The 28-year-old had played in the friendly fixtures against Ecuador and Canada but was an unused substitute on Wednesday.
